In 2007, archaeologists made a fascinating find in the ancient city of Shahr-e Sukhteh, Iran, often referred to as the "Burnt City." Among the unearthed remains was a woman estimated to be between 28 and 35 years old at the time of her death, with an intact artificial eye in her left eye socket. This remarkable discovery is recognized as the world's oldest known artificial eye, dating back to 2900-2800 BC.

The artificial eye found in Shahr-e Sukhteh is not only a testament to the advanced technological capabilities of the civilization, but also a reflection of their intricate craftsmanship. The surface of the artificial eye is covered with a thin layer of gold, engraved with a central circle representing the iris and gold lines patterned like sun rays. This level of detail suggests a high degree of sophistication in their understanding of human anatomy and aesthetics.


Shahr-e Sukhteh, also known as the “Burnt City”, is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in the world. Located in southeastern Iran, it is believed to be one of the oldest civilizations in the region, dating back over 5,000 years. The site covers an impressive area of around 151 hectares and comprises a well-organized urban plan with streets, buildings, and a complex water management system. This indicates that the inhabitants of Shahr-e Sukhteh were not only skilled in creating detailed artifacts but also in planning and constructing large urban settlements.


The city was a hub of trading routes that connected Mesopotamia and Iran with the Indus civilizations. Archaeological finds at Shahr-e Sukhteh include objects originating from distant regions such as Mesopotamia, Central Asia, and the Indus Valley, indicating extensive trade connections. This suggests that the city was not only a center of technological innovation but also a significant player in the economic landscape of the time. the iron that took off the was even old the artificial eye.. but remain undisclosed
