The tragic case of Shaniya Davis has many chilling aspects that are not widely known. One such fact is that the initial reports falsely claimed that the debt was drug-related. In reality, Mario McNeill had lent Antoinette Davis the money to pay for a hotel room and to buy food when she and her children were homeless. Antoinette refused to pay, so Mario took Shaniya. Antoinette made no attempt to stop him from taking the 5-year-old.



Another lesser-known fact is that the police and school employees failed to notify child protective services workers of concerns regarding Shaniya’s family. For instance, the police had conducted a drug raid at her family’s home several months prior to her murder. This oversight raises questions about the effectiveness of the system in place to protect vulnerable children.



The case had a profound impact on the public and caught the attention of celebrities. Former professional basketball star Shaquille O’Neal paid for Shaniya’s funeral. Music star J. Cole, who is from Fayetteville, wrote a song about her. The case continues to be remembered and discussed, highlighting the enduring impact of this tragic event.

After being reported missing by her mother, Police found Shaniya’s lifeless body near Fayetteville.

By that point, her mother, Antoinette had been arrested for sex trafficking.

After falsely accusing her boyfriend, Antoinette admitted she offered sex with her daughter to pay back money, not to kill her.

Shortly after the recovery of Shaniya Davis’ body, Mario Andretti McNeill was arrested and accused of her murder. 

Investigations revealed that Shaniya had been both raped and strangled.

Antoinette was later sentenced to at least 17 1/2 years in prison. McNeill was sentenced to death.
