"The Murder of Dr. Harrigan," as the new picture at the Globe insists, occurs in a self-service elevator of one of the larger metropolitan hospitals. It is well to bear that in mind; otherwise you will be bound to suspect that it took place in a lunatic asylum filled with manic depressives pretending to be doctors and nurses. Some second-hand knowledge of hospital routine compels us to confess that we do not believe there ever was such an institution as Dr. Harrigan's. The mere suggestion that there might be upset us so thoroughly that we never were able to concentrate on the Harrigan case. It reached some sort of conclusion on the screen, but it is an unsolved mystery so far as we are concerned. To the best of our recollection, Dr. Harrigan was the sort who goes around inviting murder. So was Peter Melady, who had stolen his formula for an anesthetic, but still insisted upon being operated upon by the man he had defrauded. Then there were a few nurses who seemed to spend their time prowling about the corridors, eavesdropping on patients' conversations and flashing meaning looks upon the internes and medical directors. No one ever seemed to pay much attention to the paying customers.Eventually Dr. Harrigan was found murdered, with a surgeon's knife in his side, and Mr. Melady—the old fraud!—disappeared entirely. Practically every one was under suspicion, the police joined the nurses and internes in their prowls through the hallways and every now and then some one would scream. Fortunately for the police, Ricardo Cortez was able to preserve his sense of humor and so managed to solve the double murder. The solution probably will surprise you. After all, why shouldn't it? Anything could have happened in that hospital.
