On November 4, 1940, a poignant moment captured the resilience and determination of the human spirit. A bride, undeterred by the destruction surrounding her, made her way through the debris and wreckage of her recently bombed home to fulfill her commitment of getting married. This photograph from London stands as a testament to the strength and hope displayed by individuals even in the face of adversity.

A whole Russian family was wiped out except their 8-year-old daughter, Maria Chelysheva. In 2014, Maria’s 42-year-old father, Mikhail Chelyshev, wanted to have potato for lunch. When he entered the cellar where the potatoes were stored, he collapsed and died. His wife and son went to check what had happened to him, they also collapsed and died. Maria’s 68-year-old grandmother called for help, but she entered the cellar before any help could arrive. She was met with the same fate; she collapsed and died. The family made the mistake of storing their potatoes in their enclosed cellar and allowing them to decompose. Potatoes contain solanine, a glycoalkaloid that can be very toxic. As the potatoes decayed, they released toxic level of the glycoalkaloid that shut down their nervous system when they entered the cellar.
