Maria’s 68-year-old grandmother called for help, but she entered the cellar before any help could arrive. She was met with the same fate; she collapsed and died. The family made the mistake of storing their potatoes in their enclosed cellar and allowing them to decompose. Potatoes contain solanine, a glycoalkaloid that can be very toxic. As the potatoes decayed, they released toxic level of the glycoalkaloid that shut down their nervous system when they entered the cellar.
